Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or avocado oil
  • cups onion diced (about 1 onion)
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 cup green bell pepper diced (about 1 bell pepper)
  • 5 cups sweet potatoes peeled and cubed (about 2 large sweet potatoes)
  • 30 oz canned tomato sauce
  • 16 oz canned diced tomatoes
  • 30 oz black beans drained and rinsed (2 cans)
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • ½ teaspoon paprika

Equipment

  • Skillet
  • slow cooker
  • Cutting board
  • Knife

Method

Step 1: Brown the Turkey
  1. In a skillet over medium-high heat, add oil and brown the ground turkey for about 5-7 minutes until fully cooked.
Step 2: Sauté the Aromatics
  1. Add the diced onion to the skillet and sauté for 3-5 minutes until softened. Stir in minced garlic and cook for one additional minute to release its flavor.
Step 3: Combine Ingredients in the Slow Cooker
  1. Transfer the cooked turkey, onion, and garlic to your slow cooker. Add the diced green bell pepper, cubed sweet potatoes, tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, drained black beans, and all the seasonings (chili powder, cumin, salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, and paprika). Stir thoroughly to combine.
Step 4: Slow Cook
  1. Set the slow cooker to low and let the chili cook for 4-6 hours. Stir occasionally to ensure even cooking. The chili is ready when the sweet potato chunks are tender, and the flavors are rich and well-developed.
Step 5: Adjust Seasoning
  1. Taste the chili and adjust the seasoning if needed before serving. Add more salt or spices to suit your preference.
